The Lechon: An Anti-Vegan Filipino Dish

After countless fiestas while growing up, some two years of being vegan, and despite wanting a potbelly pet someday, there’s just one image that neither makes me cringe nor drool.

I have been preparing for a potbelly pet by reading up lots on it, but maybe it’s the Filipino culture that when you say “Pig”, that’s “Lechon,”  that’s food.  There’s a celebration somewhere.  Somebody gave birth, somebody’s getting married, somebody’s birthday, somebody’s biggest break, Christmas, New Year, etc., etc.  We don’t kill it to torture it, or to satisfy our ego, or to make us feel superior, or out of hate.  We eat.  That’s all.  It’s all quite devoid of malice. Nothing personal.

As I have researched, getting to know this animal by heart, though, can change one’s mind.  But that would be changing history and culture on  very deep levels.
